What Are Dakuon and Handakuon?

Dakuon (濁音) are voiced hiragana sounds made by adding two small dots — called a dakuten (゛) — to certain basic hiragana characters. Handakuon (半濁音) are semi-voiced sounds made by adding a small circle — called a handakuten (゜) — to the h-row only. Together they add 25 new sounds to your Japanese without learning new stroke patterns.

Which Rows Get a Dakuten?

Only 4 rows from basic hiragana can take a dakuten mark:

  • K row → G row  ·
  • S row → Z row  ·
  • T row → D row  ·
  • H row → B row  ·

💡 Note: ぢ (ji) and づ (zu) in the D row sound identical to and in modern Japanese. You will see them in some words but they are rare.

What About Handakuon?

The handakuten (゜) only works on the H row — nowhere else. It turns every h-sound into a p-sound: は→ぱ、ひ→ぴ、ふ→ぷ、へ→ぺ、ほ→ぽ. These 5 characters are called the P row (ぱ行) and complete the full voiced sound set.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Them?

Honestly, if you already know basic hiragana, one or two days is enough. You are not learning new shapes — just recognising a small mark on characters you already know. The hardest part is remembering that the T row only gets 3 dakuon (not 5) and that the handakuten only works on the H row. Use the chart above, tap through each row out loud, and it will stick fast.
